What is Anxiety?

Anxiety is a complex and often overwhelming experience. Sometimes, the source is clear, such as a major life change, ongoing stress at work, or a difficult personal situation. Other times, it builds gradually, becoming a constant sense of unease that lingers in the background of your daily life.

When anxiety becomes persistent, it can drain your energy and affect your ability to focus, connect, or enjoy things the way you used to. Everyday tasks can start to feel overwhelming, and the joy you once felt in relationships or routines may begin to fade. The cycle of “what ifs” and worst-case thinking can make it feel like you’re stuck in your own mind with no clear way out.

At InnerQore, we understand that anxiety is more than just feeling nervous. Our compassionate therapists provide anxiety counselling that looks at the full picture. We use evidence-based methods, including CBT and other forms of anxiety psychotherapy, to help you explore what’s fuelling your anxiety and build tools to manage it effectively. With the right support, it is possible to feel more present, more balanced, and more like yourself again.

How Can Anxiety Therapy Help?

Your current experiences with anxiety reflect the journey you’ve been on and the challenges you’ve faced along the way. Therapy for anxiety can help you better understand these experiences and equip you to confidently face the future. Through anxiety counselling, you can:
Discovering what sets off your anxiety can go a long way in managing it. Psychotherapy for anxiety can help you identify and understand your triggers. This self-awareness not only gives you a sense of control over your anxiety but also helps you anticipate and navigate situations that might cause unnecessary stress. With this knowledge, you can develop personalised strategies to live a more balanced life.
Anxiety often begins with negative thoughts that spiral into overwhelming fear or worry. In therapy, especially CBT for anxiety, you’ll learn how to notice these thoughts and shift them into more realistic, grounded perspectives. This can help you feel more at ease and reduce the intensity of anxious thinking.
Life can throw a lot at you. Having practical ways to manage anxious thoughts makes a big difference. In anxiety therapy, you’ll learn tools like deep breathing exercises, mindfulness practices, and cognitive-behavioural techniques. These strategies can calm your mind and body, helping you feel more in control when anxiety shows up.
Feeling overwhelmed by emotions is a common part of anxiety. Psychotherapy provides you with tools to manage emotions more effectively so you can stay calm and centred, even during stressful moments. With better emotional regulation, you’ll feel more stable and resilient in day-to-day life.
Anxiety can undermine your confidence and make you doubt your ability to cope. Therapy helps you recognise your strengths and build a stronger sense of self-trust. As your confidence grows, you’ll feel more capable of facing anxiety-inducing situations with clarity and resilience.
Effective communication is essential for healthy relationships and overall well-being. Our anxiety counselling sessions help you express yourself clearly, listen with empathy, and feel more comfortable navigating conversations. These skills can help reduce misunderstandings and strengthen your personal and professional relationships.
Anxiety often impacts your relationships, causing strain or distance. Therapy for severe anxiety and relationship-related stress can support you in creating more meaningful, connected relationships. You’ll learn how to set boundaries, respond with empathy, and create a stronger sense of mutual support with the people who matter most.

Questions About Anxiety

The time it takes to see results from anxiety therapy can vary from person to person. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others might need several months of therapy to notice significant improvements. It depends on factors such as the severity of your anxiety, your personal goals, and how actively you participate in the therapy process. Generally, most people begin to see some positive changes within the first 6 to 12 sessions, but it’s important to be patient and committed to the process.

Anxiety therapy uses a variety of techniques to help you manage and reduce your anxiety. Some of the most common techniques include:

  • Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT): Helps you identify and change negative thought patterns and behaviours.
  • Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques: Teach you how to stay present and calm, reducing overall anxiety.
  • Exposure Therapy: Gradually exposes you to anxiety-inducing situations in a controlled way to help you build confidence and reduce fear.
There is no single best therapy for everyone, but CBT for anxiety is one of the most effective approaches. We also offer mindfulness, exposure-based strategies, and relational therapy depending on your needs.
Stress is typically short-term and connected to a specific cause. Anxiety is more persistent and can affect your daily functioning, even when there is no obvious stressor. If your worries are constant, intense, or affecting your health, therapy can help.
Yes, anxiety therapy can help with the physical symptoms of anxiety. Anxiety often manifests in physical ways, such as increased heart rate, sweating, muscle tension, and stomach issues. Techniques like mindfulness, relaxation exercises, and biofeedback can help you learn to calm your body’s physical response to anxiety. By addressing the root causes of your anxiety and learning how to manage it, you can also reduce these physical symptoms, leading to an overall improvement in your well-being.
Whether or not you need medication along with anxiety therapy depends on your specific situation. Some people find that therapy alone is enough to manage their anxiety, while others may benefit from a combination of therapy and medication. Medication can help reduce the intensity of anxiety symptoms, making it easier to engage in and benefit from therapy. At InnerQore, we don’t prescribe medication, but your therapist can help you determine if medication might be helpful for you and guide you through the process of finding the right treatment plan tailored to your needs.

Our Space

Built in 1825 in the Neo-Classical style by a carpenter named Robert Shuter, the practice building is one of Thornhill Village’s oldest houses. Since 1869, it has been the home of many of Thornhill’s doctors, during which time it became known by the name “Homewood Hall.” The house initially underwent renovation in the 1960s and then very recently received an addition and underwent a major renovation between 2020 and 2022. The building is now home to two separate clinical practices—InnerQore Health: Psychology and Wellness and Dr. David Kurzman and Associates (a neuropsychology practice). We are proud to call this beautiful piece of history our home.
