Over time, relationships can start to feel “too” comfortable.

In today’s fast-paced world—with careers, family responsibilities, social pressures, and constant busyness—it’s easy for our connection with our partner to become strained. Misunderstandings and frustrations can build up, and what was once exciting and full of passion can become routine and predictable, leaving you feeling isolated, misunderstood, and wondering if your relationship can ever get back to what it was.

At InnerQore, we help you prioritize your connection and rediscover the joy and intimacy you once had.

Why Couples Therapy?

Often, couples come to therapy after trying to fix their issues on their own or relying on advice from friends and family. While these efforts can help for a while, they often lead to the same frustrating patterns without lasting change.

In relationships, it’s often the little things that gradually lead to a breakdown of communication and trust. Small misunderstandings, overlooked gestures, and unspoken feelings can accumulate over time, causing partners to feel underappreciated, disrespected, and unloved.

Couples therapy helps identify and address underlying issues, fostering a space where both partners can express their feelings, rebuild trust, and re-establish a sense of appreciation and respect for one another.

Through compassionate, guided discussions and practical strategies, couples therapy helps you and your partner:

How Can Couples Therapy Help?

Your current relationship reflects the journey you and your partner have been on and the
choices you’ve made along the way. Couples therapy can help you both better understand
your past and confidently face the future together. Through therapy, you can:

When you respect each other’s boundaries, you both feel valued and understood, making your bond stronger and healthier. In couples therapy, you’ll learn how to understand and honour each other’s personal limits, helping you create a safe and trusting space in your relationship.
Couples therapy helps you become more attentive to what your partner truly needs. Through guided conversations, you’ll learn to listen actively and respond with care. By being more in tune with each other’s emotional and practical needs, you can build a deeper, more supportive connection that makes both of you feel cherished and appreciated.
In therapy, you’ll work on treating each other with more empathy. This means really understanding and feeling each other’s emotions. Responding to your partner with compassion and kindness strengthens your emotional bond and helps reduce misunderstandings. This empathetic approach makes your relationship more loving and supportive.
When it feels like you keep having the same arguments over and over again, it can get exhausting. Couples therapy is a safe space to address challenging conversations, providing invaluable opportunities to deepen your connection and truly understand one another. Instead of letting conflicts escalate, you’ll learn to communicate clearly and find solutions together. This helps keep the peace and strengthens your relationship, so you can spend more time enjoying each other and less time arguing.
Couples therapy can help you reconnect and deepen your intimacy. By exploring both the emotional and physical aspects of your relationship in a safe space, you can rekindle the closeness and passion that brought you together. Open communication and intentional efforts can help you rebuild a strong, intimate bond that brings you both joy and satisfaction.
Couples therapy helps you get on the same page about the big stuff. Whether it’s values, goals, or future plans, having these discussions with a therapist’s guidance can help you understand each other’s perspectives and find common ground. This alignment reduces potential conflicts and brings more unity and cooperation into your relationship.

How Couples Therapy Works

Our personalized approach makes sure you get the right support from the very beginning.

We see you as a couple first

First, we meet with both of you together. This session helps us understand your relationship and the issues you’re facing. It’s a chance for both of you to share your thoughts and goals for therapy. Starting together ensures that both of you feel heard and included from the beginning.

We do one individual session with each of you

Next, we have one session with each of you separately. This allows you to share your personal feelings and concerns without your partner present. These individual sessions give us valuable insights that will help us in the joint sessions.

We meet you as a couple for the rest of our sessions

After the individual sessions, we meet with both of you together for the rest of your therapy. These sessions focus on working as a team to address your issues, improve communication, and strengthen your relationship. Using the understanding gained from the individual sessions, we help you reconnect and build a healthier partnership.

Questions About Couples Therapy

Generally, yes. Couples therapy is most effective when both partners are involved in the sessions. However, at the beginning of therapy, your therapist might choose to meet with each of you separately to gain a better understanding of your individual perspectives and concerns. These initial individual sessions help set the stage for more productive joint sessions. After these separate meetings, the majority of the therapy sessions will include both of you, working together to address your relationship issues and build a stronger bond.
While there are no guarantees, couples therapy often leads to a deeper emotional bond and reduced dissatisfaction within the relationship. Many couples find that therapy helps them communicate more effectively, resolve conflicts more constructively, and reconnect on a deeper level. The success of couples therapy depends on various factors, including the willingness of both partners to engage in the process and the specific issues being addressed. With commitment and effort, many couples experience significant positive changes in their relationship.
The duration of couples therapy varies widely depending on the couple’s specific needs and goals. Some couples may find that just a few sessions (between 1 and 5) are enough to address their issues and make meaningful progress. Others may choose to stay in therapy for several months to work through more complex or long- standing problems. The length of therapy is a decision that you, your partner, and your therapist will make together, based on what makes the most sense for your relationship.
In couples therapy, the therapist’s primary commitment is to the relationship, not to either individual partner. This means that anything you discuss privately with the therapist may be shared with your partner to maintain transparency and trust within the therapy process. The goal is to ensure that both partners feel equally supported and that the therapist is working in the best interest of the relationship as a whole. This approach helps build faith and trust in the therapist and ensures that the needs of the relationship are prioritized.

Our Space

Built in 1825 in the Neo-Classical style by a carpenter named Robert Shuter, the practice building is one of Thornhill Village’s oldest houses. Since 1869, it has been the home of many of Thornhill’s doctors, during which time it became known by the name “Homewood Hall.” The house initially underwent renovation in the 1960s and then very recently received an addition and underwent a major renovation between 2020 and 2022. The building is now home to two separate clinical practices—InnerQore Health: Psychology and Wellness and Dr. David Kurzman and Associates (a neuropsychology practice). We are proud to call this beautiful piece of history our home.
